Faroese Mountaineer Jens Jákup Hansen Prepares to Scale Ama Dablam in Nepal to Raise Alzheimer’s Awareness

Posted on October 12, 2026

Faroese mountaineer Jens Jákup Hansen is preparing once again to embark on an international expedition to test his limits against one of the world’s most formidable peaks. His current objective is Ama Dablam in Nepal, where he intends to climb to the summit.

Hansen’s journey to the Himalayas follows a series of high-altitude accomplishments in recent years. In January 2024, he successfully reached the summit of Aconcagua in South America, and he also spent time trekking in Nepal last year. However, Hansen emphasizes that standing atop a mountain peak is not his primary motivation. He describes these grueling mountain journeys as a vital mental and emotional reset, explaining that when he is on the mountain, everything revolves around remaining completely present in the moment. This focus brings him a profound sense of peace and allows him to return home viewing everyday life through a fresh perspective.

Beyond personal reflection, Hansen’s trek up Ama Dablam carries a deeply personal humanitarian cause. He is actively using the expedition to raise funds for the Faroese Alzheimer’s Association (Alzheimerfelagið) following his father’s diagnosis with Alzheimer’s disease. Through his climbing endeavor, Hansen aims to draw public attention to the illness and highlight the significant challenges faced by family members and caregivers. Speaking during an interview on the national morning broadcast Góðan morgun Føroyum, Hansen detailed his physical preparation, the inherent risks involved in Himalayan climbing, the deep satisfaction found in mountaineering, and why traveling to remote corners of the globe sometimes proves necessary to fully appreciate what one has back home.

The Faroe Islands, a North Atlantic archipelago characterized by steep sea cliffs, rugged mountainous terrain, and a population of around 54,000 residents, has a culture deeply tied to challenging natural environments. While hiking across local fells is a traditional pastime, high-altitude alpine expeditions like scaling the 6,812-meter Ama Dablam remain a specialized pursuit among Faroese adventurers. Hansen’s initiative highlights a broader trend of Faroese sports figures and adventurers leveraging international platforms to address pressing health issues within their home country. In tight-knit island communities where family networks form the primary backbone of elder care, public initiatives targeting neurodegenerative conditions like Alzheimer’s play a crucial role in reducing social stigma, raising vital support funds, and improving resources for patients and caregivers across the country.
