Sound of the Shore: How Jóhannes Steingrund Has Engineered the Acoustics of the Faroese G! Festival Since the Beginning

Posted on July 19, 2026

Jóhannes Steingrund has been an integral part of the technical team at the G! Festival for every single edition since its inception. Today, he is the owner and director of the company Steingrund Akustik, which, in collaboration with a large technical crew, ensures that the music at the festival sounds exactly as it should. For the current edition of the festival, the technical team comprises around 30 specialists. They are distributed across the event’s three primary stages, which are situated on the beach, at the playground, and inside the old barn. Additionally, the technical crew manages smaller logistical tasks, including the disco event held at the festival camping grounds.

Over the decades, countless national and international musicians have graced the stages of G!, but one particular performance remains uniquely etched in Steingrund’s memory. He recalls that the absolute highlight of his career occurred in 2005 when the iconic Swedish rock band Europe performed at the festival. Steingrund mixed the monitor sound for them, which he describes as an incredibly massive and memorable milestone. The monitor mix is the specific audio feed that the musicians hear on stage, making it absolutely vital for ensuring they can hear both their own instruments and their bandmates while performing live.

However, managing the acoustics of a seaside festival does not come without severe challenges. One of the greatest logistical crises Steingrund faced occurred during the 2010 festival, when a powerful North Atlantic swell damaged the main beach stage, rendering it unstable and unsafe for use. The team had to find an immediate alternative solution, quickly erecting a temporary stage on the asphalt nearby. This sudden shift transformed the playground stage into the festival’s largest venue. The abrupt relocation meant that both heavy audio equipment and the scheduled performers had to be moved on extremely short notice, resulting in what Steingrund remembers as a chaotic but ultimately successful rescue operation.

Although much has evolved since the G! Festival was first established, the core mission for Steingrund and his technical crew remains entirely unchanged. Their primary objective continues to be delivering an unparalleled auditory experience for both the performing artists on stage and the thousands of festival-goers gathered in the audience.

The G! Festival, held annually in the picturesque seaside village of Syðrugøta on the island of Eysturoy, is widely regarded as one of the most unique musical events in the world, renowned for its dramatic geographical backdrop. By placing its main stages directly on the sandy beaches and among the traditional grass-roofed homes of a remote Faroese fjord, the festival routinely contends with the volatile weather patterns of the North Atlantic. This coastal exposure demands robust infrastructure and highly adaptive engineering, as tidal shifts and sudden ocean swells can easily disrupt delicate acoustic setups. Economically and culturally, the festival serves as a vital showcase for both Faroese and international talent, drawing thousands of global visitors to the archipelago each summer and injecting significant revenue into the local hospitality and tourism sectors. The enduring success of local technical specialists like Steingrund Akustik underscores how Faroese enterprises have successfully modernized to meet demanding international event production standards, proving that even the most remote and ecologically challenging environments can host world-class cultural spectacles.
